SEO – or Search Engine Optimization – is huge: both in importance to your online business and in complexity. For a business to find its online market, it’s got to rank highly on a search engine page, but in a crowded marketplace, that’s increasingly difficult. And with the algorithms behind SEO constantly evolving, it can feel like an absolute nightmare for the technically disinclined to keep up with the dos and don’ts of optimization. Fortunately, help is at hand, and it’s plentiful, accessible, and a lot of it is free. So, read on if you’re searching for resources to help you get to grips with the constantly changing world of SEO – there are some absolute blinders out there, and I’m going to list a few of my favourites below. 1. HubspotOkay, so I’m not going to win any prizes for originality here – everyone recommends Hubspot for just about anything SEO-related (and, well, just about everything else, too) but it’s for good reason. Whatever digital marketing-related question you might have, Hubspot almost certainly has you covered. And not just with supremely informative blog posts (like this one, a step-by-step guide to search engine optimizing your blog posts) – Hubspot Academy also features a wealth of free courses on hundreds of topics, from LinkedIn marketing to time-management skills for Customer Support representatives. The only downside – and I’m reaching here – is that the sheer volume of content and knowledge is a little overwhelming and it’s an absolute rabbit hole that you probably want to set aside a decent amount of time to explore. 2. MozAnother cornucopia of SEO delights, as you would expect from a business whose raison d’etre is search engine optimization. They are, of course, going to edge you towards their paid programme (you could do much worse, though, if you’re happy to spend some cash) but there’s an abundance of free resources too, including a step-by-step guide aimed at complete beginners. Their free online analysis tools are super useful, too. 3. Search Engine LandThe clue is… kind of in the name, but it’s not just about SEO – far from it. In addition to an abundance of search engine optimization tips, tricks and advice, Search Engine Land also offers daily news briefs covering all the latest developments in the world of digital marketing with expert analysis to put everything into context. There are also quite a few free webinars you can sign up for, if you’re interested in diving a bit deeper. 4. Search Engine JournalAnother one that does exactly what it says on the tin (side note: that slogan was a good day’s work for the copywriter who created it – that’s some serious cultural longevity. But I digress…). Search Engine Journal is another one of those sites that somebody interested in getting to grips with SEO could happily spend the rest of their life exploring. The pop-ups are… pesky, but they’re easily taken care of (and certainly nothing you’d be worried about clicking on by accident) and the resources are phenomenal – both for SEO and for just about everything else a digital marketer could need. 5. Marketing SchoolOkay, this is a podcast rather than a blog, per se, but don’t worry – you won’t need to set aside any serious time to get the benefits. Each episode is typically around 5 minutes long and covers top-level issues in digital marketing – a recent episode (11 March 2022), for example, looked at how SEO is going to change in the future. Three days later, hosts Neil Patel and Eric Siu were offering three quick suggestions for increasing traffic to your website every day. Sure, mastering the intricacies of SEO and predicting its evolution can be the work of an entire career in digital marketing, but getting a handle on the basics has never been so straightforward. And the rewards – greater visibility for your brand, increased traffic to your website, the potential for higher sales and fostering new long-term customer relationships – are well worth the time and effort. The exact alchemy behind the rankings may change, but building in a robust SEO strategy with excellent copy designed to incorporate keywords seamlessly into the flow of your online content is always going to be a winning strategy. And if you need a copywriter to put that into effect for you… well, click below and let’s talk.
